Baker
Stickland worked closely with both Main Contractor Willmott
Dixon, and architects Edward Cullinan and Partners, to design
and engineer a special concealed grid system for the third
floor curved raft ceilings, including a floating perimeter
detail and recessed lighting.
As
part of the ceiling installation, purpose made curved aluminium
feature panels run adjacent to the rafts and the lantern rooflights
to provide an accessible service enclosure.

The
metal panelling around the laylights, and
abutting
the rafts, was also designed, manufactured and installed by
Baker Stickland.
Formed
from powder coated aluminium the alignment and detailling
is superb. All of the vertical panels are held in place by
a "hook-on" arrangement to allow easy future access
for the electrical services installed behind. |

Stickland win Silver

Baker
Stickland win Silver at the AIS Awards for their bespoke ceilings
at the new Herbarium in Kew Gardens.
Tim
Jennings, MD of ttsp, and guest judge, said of our ceilings,
"To
call this entry just a ceiling is to misrepresent a skilful
piece of precision engineering. Technically extremely challenging,
the finished article is a thing of true beauty"
The
award has been given for Baker Stickland's StoSilent acoustic
suspended ceilings at the iconic new Herbarium in Kew Gardens,
whose completion coincides with the 250th Anniversary of the
Royal Horticultural Society.
The
Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew holds one of the world's largest
and most important collections of samples of plant diversity.
Designed
by Edward Cullinan and Partners,the
core of the new wing is a four-storey, brick-clad, concrete-frame
box containing the precious specimens. As the contents are
best examined in daylight, study areas are located on the
perimeter screened by an undulating timber façade.
The main work space for graphics, editing and computer staff
is located on the top floor, within the large concrete vaulted
roof.
The
Architect`s vision of the StoSilent rafts under the radiused
concrete soffit resolves the acoustic problems normally associated
with this construction technique and the combined effect of
the rafts floating under the curving roof slab with the curved
aluminium is visually remarkable.

The sharpness of finishing of the Sto ceilings in this project
particularly around light fittings and perimeter details,
clearly demonstrates not only the versatility and effectiveness
of Sto ceilings but also the quality of the installation carried
out by Baker Stickland.
Edward
Cullinan and Partners designs utilised both the Sto Top, skimmed
finish, and Superfine textured spray applied finishes. Both
finishes have provided superb acoustic performance, and seamless
high quality, ceilings. |

Baker
Stickland Awarded Certificate of Excellence at the 2009 AIS awards
for their Fit-Out for Trafigura - London

Completed
in September 2008, these new offices and reception for Trafigura
are fantastic. Trafigura, a significant tenant in Land Securities'
Portman Place building, just off Marble Arch, had outgrown their
two floors and needed either an additional floor, or to move. Trafigura's
facilities department managed to negotiate additional space with
one of the existing tenants which has enabling them to expand into
a further floor in Portman Place thereby saving them significant
relocation costs.
The
fit-out comprised the re-alignment and fabrication of suspended
ceilings and plasterboard drylining, Baker Sticklands Silicon Jointed
Glazed Partitioning, along with new data and telecoms, fire detection,
lighting, sprinklers, with new furniture, carpets and decorations.
Baker Stickland assisted Trafigura with space planning, Bulding
Control approvals and managed the whole Design and Build process
from beginning to end.
